Lean Thinking and 5S

Lean thinking is part of the fabric of FI Innovations

In 2009 we started along the Lean journey, but in 2012 we ramped things up by undertaking a Lean Manufacturing programme.

This Venture Southland initiative focused on four key processes:

  • Visual management and Communication
  • Our Future State process map with Critical Process milestones
  • Change Management and Opportunities for Improvement
  • Workplace Management, more commonly known as the 5S system developed in Japan

By focusing on quality, cost, delivery, safety and morale, FI Innovations increased our efficiency by up to 30 percent, delivering better products to customers and a better bottom line for the business.

The concept and simple principles of a 5S workplace management plan could be applied to any business.  For FI Innovations, things such as cutting out the searching for tools and job information helped reduce wasted time and frustration.

Before workers started a job, information was recorded and passed along the various channels of communication.

“Everything flows and is accountable, which has improved the business immensely.”

All projects are logged and tracked from the moment they enter the workshop, so that at all times we know exactly what stage a job is at and when it will be completed.
